  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy; add eggs one at a time.
  3. Incorporate buttermilk, oil, green gel food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar into the wet mixture.
  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pans.
  5. Bake for about 28 minutes or until done; cool in pans before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting: Beat butter and cream cheese until smooth; add vanilla and salt; gradually add powdered sugar and mix until fluffy.
  7. Assemble by layering the cakes with frosting in between; frost the entire cake and decorate as desired.
