  • 2 Eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup Buttermilk (room temperature)
  • 1 cup Hot coffee
  • 1/2 cup Canola oil
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 cups Fresh blackberries
  • 2 tbsp White granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp Fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Lemon zest
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 8 oz Cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 cup Black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • Chocolate skulls
  • Fresh blackberries
  • Dried rose petals

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In one bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla.
  4. Combine wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the blackberry compote, cook blackberries with sugar, lemon juice, water, and cornstarch until thickened.
  7. To make frosting, beat cream cheese and butter together before adding powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
  8. Assemble by layering the cake with blackberry compote followed by frosting on top.
  9. Decorate as desired before serving.
